I was not very optimistic about finding things to share this week. There hasn’t been much rain but it seems that the few showers that we have had encouraged some last surges in the garden. Here’s what I found.
One

Of course, the roses go on and on. Here’s a climbing ‘James Galway’.
Two

And this is ‘Darcy Bussell’. I know she suffers terribly from black spot but the colour is gorgeous and she flowers forever.
Three

Here’s a surprise find. I don’t remember planting this variety of Michaelmas daisy in the garden, it could be a blow-in. It’s welcome for adding some late colour to the shady end of the garden.
Four

The marigolds that have hardly been watered are popping again. There’s some dead heading to be done there.
Five

I shared this penstemon when I first bought it. It’s back in flower again and coincidently I discovered the plant label again. It’s full name is penstemon phoenix ‘Apple Blossom’ What difference does the phoenix name make? It’s a modern variety bred in the USA around 2006. It grows bushier, is weather resistant with non flopping stems. Sounds good to me.
Six

I can tell you it’s a heuchera, but I’ve lapsed in my list keeping. I think it is ‘Grape Timeless’ with it’s dark purple leaves and pink flowers.
Phew. I managed to find six and I reminded myself how striking ‘Grape Timeless’ is. It’s all change in the feel of the garden now. The trees at the back of the garden and the low sun combine to put the back third of the garden in shade for much longer. It’s been a warm start to October but temperatures will begin to drop away. It really is time to decide on whether to plant more tulips. Don’t forget to drop by Garden Ruminations to see what our host Jim is up to. Happy gardening to everyone.
Very pretty Penstemon; if it is ‘Apple Blossom’ then the thing I have that I thought was ‘Apple Blossom’ is something else. I have no good reason to think mine is by the way, it hasn’t had a label in years, if ever. Roses look to be high on the hot summer survivors list, maybe I should look at them again, I have none at present.

oh, you did well…such a lovely selection of six. Roses are stunning of course, but I love the penstemon and Heuchera. My purple leafed heuchera have paler pink flowers….most likely a different variety….but I have no idea because I am useless with plant labels 🫢

I have a couple with paler pink flowers. They have more metallic leaves. I do prefer the darker pink flowers.

The Penstemon is very nice! I just added my first Penstemon (digitalis), and the baby bunnies cut the flower stalk mid-bloom. Then I thought I lost it but it regrew a nice rosette, so I feel pretty good about having more next year. I also love the purple Heuchera! Great color!

My favourite this week is the heuchera. I love the colour of the leaves. Doses it grow in sun or shade?

It’s in part shade. Probably more shade than sun.

The marigolds are so vibrant! We didn’t do any this year but will need to remedy that next year.
I also had a surprise Michaelmas daisy this year, which was so welcome! I think mine is just a standard New York aster, but it’s lovely.

Roses do seem to have had a good year, my Gertie is flowering again and I noticed today there are buds on the Fighting Temeraire. I love your heuchera with the dark pink flowers, I have lost a lot of heucheras this year over the winter so need to replace them. This will definitely head the list.

Oh, I think that I have seen ‘Apple Blossom’ penstemon before. It looks like snapdragon. It certainly is pretty. Well, they are all pretty.

I’m finding a little time to read a few blogs and now it’s yours—with those ‘James Galway’ roses (stunning, by the way) looking at me like a pair of eyes and confirming just how late I am!

Beautiful Roses. Hydrangeas have been making a good recovery here as well
